"Fagin put several other questions: all with the same drift..."
(
Oliver Twist, ch.26)

There has been considerable interest in FAGIN'S GANG since its released. Thank you. Quite a number of the e-mails we receive ask similar (or the same) questions. We have included the answers to these questions here, as well as a few anticipated ones - based on what we like to know about other games.
If you have a query not answered here, please contact us.

General Questions:
When will FAGIN'S GANG be available?
FAGIN'S GANG is available NOW! Order your copy here.
How large is your first run?
990 games, minus copies for our testers and reviewers.
What kind of game is FAGIN'S GANG?
A thinking family's strategy game. We see FAGIN'S GANG as a continuation of the recent trend for the so-called 'Euro Games' or 'German Games' (although Ludorum Games is English). A simple enough mechanism for the youngest (10+) player to learn, but with potential strategies to appeal to gamers. For more discussions on 'German Games', visit Boardgame News.
Does
FAGIN'S GANG require a knowledge of Dickens or Oliver Twist?
No. This is not a trivia game; there are no questions. Fagin, his cohort and their activities provide our theme. However, if you would like to know more about the 19th century English novelist, Charles Dickens, we suggest that you visit David Perdue's excellect website here.
How much luck is involved in the game?
We don't really like games in which your hard-forged position is thwarted by the turn of a card; however, you need a little randomisation to shake up the system. A dice is rolled in FAGIN'S GANG to vary a couple of elements, but the result can be counteracted or avoided using skill!
What other games is it like?
We reckon the central mechanism that holds the game together is pretty unique (though we are prepared for some games expert to trip us up here!). For a list of games of similar weight and complexity to FAGIN'S GANG, please take a look here.
Who will NOT like this game?
If you prefer games which do not require you to think, FAGIN'S GANG is not for you. This is not Snakes and Ladders, but nor is it school. Fagin's Gang will excercise your grey cells, but it's fun too.
Has the game been tested?
Yes, rigourously! The game has been tested and blind-tested by a number of groups, friends and family (you can read a prototype review from one of our blind-testers here). Testers have been male and female, with ages ranging from 12 to 75. We're glad to say that, whilst our testers have made many useful suggestions, they have all so far enjoyed the game - and wanted to play more!
Has the game changed as a result of tests?
Of course! Testers always find ways to improve a game. FAGIN'S GANG has been through a number of incarnations since we threw it into our crocodiles' pit of game testers. However, what has not changed is the central mechanism, which suggests to us that it is pretty strong.
How big is the board?
560mm x 560mm - quarter folded.
How big is the box?
295mm x 295mm x 50mm.
How much does the game weigh?
950g
What are the components made of?
Wood, mostly, with some punched board turn markers.
Is there a computer version available?
Almost. A PC version of FAGIN'S GANG is being developed in-hous
e here at Ludorum Games. It will enable players to play each other or the machine, or both - on one machine or accross a network. Unfortunately we have no plans for a Mac version at the moment - although we would be interested in hearing from a Mac games designer.
Do you have a favourite Dickens novel?
I must confess that I have not read them all, but of those that I have read, I'd probably go for Hard Times (Dean).
Do you have a favourite song from Lionel Bart's Oliver!?
Easy. Be back soon. "We know the Bow Street runners, but they don't know this tune..." (Dean).
No, it's I'd Do Anything (Dean's girlfriend)!
Does Ludorum Games have other projects in the pipeline?
Yes. We have a diverse stable of games in development. One is based on space travel, another on train spotting. Others draw influence from the laws of quantum physics, the nature of fire, and the dangers of terraforming. All are currently in the "little bits of paper with things written on them" stage.
Who are you?
Answers to this existentialist question might take a lifetime to answer. For those short on time, further details about Jim and Dean can be found here.
